The Dubuque Fighting Saints won a thriller on the road against the Lincoln Stars, notching their second win of the season. In a back and forth third period, Dubuque potted three goals in a frenzied finish. Dylan Jackson had two goals, Ty Jackson had the game winner and the Saints second line dominated large chunks of the game to lead the team. Read about the game below in this edition of the Saints Scribbles:
-As mentioned up top, the line of Jackson, Jackson and Riese Gaber was on fire all night. Dylan Jackson scored his two goals in the first period and Ty Jackson notched the game winner in the third with less than three minutes to go. Gaber added a couple assists for the line who was the best unit all night for either team.
-A good defense is the best offense. In this case, defensemen provide the best offense. JD Greenway had an empty net goal for Dubuque, Chris Lipe had the game tying goal and Sam Martel led a dynamic rush that ended in the game winning goal. All night long, the Fighting Saints defense were pushing up in to the rush and making plays.
-In Dubuque’s first true road game of the season, the Saints showed grit to battle back. The Ice Box was loud on Friday night and provided for a tough environment. Even after falling behind in the third period, Dubuque continued their game plan and quickly chipped away. The team speed was evident in all three zones for the Fighting Saints.
-Matthew Thiessen was once again solid in net. The netminder never seems to panic and continues to provide quality minutes between the pipes for Dubuque. Thiessen was a brick wall after the early third period goals. Once again, it took perfect shots and rebounds to beat the Fighting Saints goaltender.
-This was a big win for Dubuque not only because all road wins are, but also because the teams recent history against Lincoln was not friendly. The Fighting Saints had won once since 2014-15 against Lincoln. The two teams will battle later this season in Dubuque.
-Special teams were more or less a non-factor in this game. Coming in, the Lincoln Stars had the most penalty minutes in the USHL. However, they were disciplined this game and didn’t afford many chances to the Fighting Saints a man up.
-Dubuque will look to bounce back quick against the Omaha Lancers. The Fighting Saints will face off against the Lancers at 7:05 p.m. Saturday night. The Lancers are 2-3 on the season after a win against Fargo Friday night.
