DUBUQUE, Iowa — The Dubuque Fighting Saints made another trade before the regular season as they swapped forward Jan Kern for Andre Ghantous of the Omaha Lancers. Kern, who played for Dubuque last season, saw action in the team’s only preseason home game thus far. The Saints also received a conditional pick from Omaha. General Manager Kalle Larsson explained that one of the reasons for the trade was the USHL’s rule regulating the number of import players teams can have on their roster.
“With the roster cut deadline getting closer, unfortunately we were not going to be able to keep all our imports due to league rules. Jan Kern was an important piece to our team last season and he will be missed in Dubuque. Omaha is getting a good player and a great kid. We wish Jan nothing but the best with the Lancers.”
The main piece in the trade coming Dubuque’s way is Ghantous. Ghantous played the last two seasons in the BCHL for the Trail Smoke Eaters. In each of his two seasons, Ghantous totaled 44 points. The forward stands at 5’9’’, 170 lbs and hails from Glendale, California.
“We are excited to add Andre Ghantous to our organization,” Larsson said. “He’s a crafty, skilled player with a lot of energy and he put up good numbers when he was in the BCHL. We look forward to him joining our squad.”
With the 2018 DICK’s Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic counting towards the regular season this year, the deadline roster cuts are a week earlier than in years past. The trade for Ghantous comes just under a week before roster’s need to be finalized.
