After a strong victory last night against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, the Fighting Saints take the ice at the Mystique Community Ice Arena at 7:05 p.m. tonight. The Saints, backed by a strong effort from the second line of Riese Gaber, Dylan and Ty Jackson, defeated the RoughRiders 3-2.
Matthew Thiessen stopped all 15 shots he faced and was pulled just after the midway point of the second period. Aaron Randazzo was superb in relief. He allowed two tough goals but made numerous highlight reel saves and secured the win for the Saints.
Tonight the Saints will look to move to 2-0 as they get set for the regular season starting on September 29th. As was the case with last night’s game, the result is secondary to the product that Head Coach Oliver David and his staff see on the ice. David said last night that the coaching staff was hoping to answer some questions they had about the team and the same will ring true for the preseason matchup tonight.
The RoughRiders should come out hungry as they look to bounce back from the defeat. Despite two goals in the third period, they couldn’t get the equalizer. A costly too many men on the ice penalty hurt Cedar Rapids late in the third.
If the tone of the third period last night is any indication, we are in for a good one at Our House. The two teams engaged in multiple after the whistle altercations during the third period, including one after the final whistle as well. It is no secret that bad blood is shared between the two teams and the finish to last night’s game suggests that this year will be no different.
