Dubuque gets a point in Thanksgiving Eve showdown

DUBUQUE, Iowa — Alex Steeves and Quinn Preston posted goals to put the Dubuque Fighting Saints up 2-0, but it was a resilient Waterloo Black Hawks team that rolled into Dubuque, erased the deficit, and defeated the Saints 3-2 in a shootout on Wednesday night at the Mystique Community Ice Center. It was the first shootout that the Saints have been a part of this season.

Jackson Cates scored the only goal of the shootout, and both goals in regulation for the Black Hawks, both on the power play. Cates outwaited Jaxon Castor for the first shot of the shootout competition and scored. Matej Tomek, on the other end for Waterloo, denied all three Fighting Saints shooters to seal the victory for the visitors.

Steeves continued his impressive point streak, as it improved to nine games. On a shorthanded chance created by Brendan Bushy, Steeves skated through the Waterloo defense and golfed a shot through Tomek to put the Saints up 1-0 in the first period.

At the 7:59 mark of the second period, Preston increased the Saints’ lead on the power play, as he bashed home the rebound of a Josh Maniscalco shot from the point. Bushy also added an assist, his second point of the game.

It was the Hawks though who stormed back. Cates picked up his first goal three minutes after Preston’s tally on the power play, and in a similar situation eight minutes after that on the back door with a wide open net to shoot at. It was two power play goals on five opportunities for the Hawks.

The Saints went 1-for-6 on the power play in a game that featured 21 penalty calls and 64 minutes’ worth of penalties dished out. Every goal in regulation was scored on special teams.

Castor held the fort multiple times throughout regulation and overtime, making 30 saves in the shootout loss. The Hawks had two goals disallowed—one due to a blown whistle and another due to time expiring in the first period, but Waterloo battled through.

After a Thanksgiving Day break, the Saints are back in action for two more games this weekend.
