Saints two leads erased as Steel use third period to rally past Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa — Cole Guttman scored twice for the Dubuque Fighting Saints, but the Chicago Steel rallied back with a third-period goal from Austin Magera en route to a 3-2 win over the Saints on Friday night at the Mystique Community Ice Center. Chicago has taken all three meetings in the season series to this point with one game remaining in December.

Magera, the recipient of a C.J. Walker pass on a broken play, tapped the puck past Jaxon Castor at the 8:29 mark of the third period to put the Steel up 3-2, and for good. It was just one of four overall shots on goal taken by the Steel in the third period. The Saints fired 13 of their 30 shots on goal on the night in the third period alone.

Chicago outscored the Fighting Saints in the second period, sandwiching a Guttman goal with tallies from Samuel Bucek, just six seconds into a power play chance, and Baker Shore, whose goal at the 15:20 mark tied the game at two.

Guttman’s first goal came on the power play, as Chayse Primeau threaded the needle to him on the back door, and his shot beat Steel goaltender Oskar Autio to put the Saints up 1-0 with just 13 seconds remaining in the first period. His second goal came at the 10:57 mark of the second period, as he fired a shot from the left circle that evaded Autio, and put the Saints up 2-1.

Autio once again found a way to fool the Saints, as he kept his career goals-against average at an even 2.00 in the season series, and made 28 saves in the victory for the Steel.

The Saints were able to put pressure on Chicago’s top-rated penalty kill, as they went 2-for-5 on the man advantage. They were unable, however, to capitalize on a penalty halfway through the third period down by a goal.

Castor, who made 18 saves on the night, kept the Steel scoreless with 10 saves in the first period, and many of the difficult variety.

The Saints are back in action on Saturday, November 11 against the Central Illinois Flying Aces at the Grossinger Motors Arena. Catch all of the action on the radio home of the Saints, Dubuque’s Super Hits 106.1 FM, or the USHL’s streaming video provider, HockeyTV.
