Fighting Saints alumni take huge strides in early October

Here's what's going on with our alumni in early October.

-The Florida Panthers announced that they have signed defenseman Mike Matheson to an eight-year, $39 million contract extension. The extension will keep Matheson with the Panthers through the 2025–26 season. Matheson played in Dubuque during the 2011–12 season, was drafted by the Panthers in the first round of the 2012 NHL Draft, and then went on to a strong career at Boston College. Last year was Matheson's first full year in the NHL.

-In his second game of the season, on October 7 against the Winnipeg Jets, Calgary Flames forward Johnny Gaudreau scored a goal and added three assists in a four-point effort. Calgary defeated Winnipeg 6-3.

-Former head coach/GM Jason Lammers, who served in that role for the last two seasons in Dubuque, picked up his first win as head coach of the Niagara University Purple Eagles with a 4-3 victory over the Robert Morris Colonials. Robert Morris was picked to finish second in the Atlantic Hockey Conference.

-Forward Zach Solow, last year's USHL Forward of the Year, and Dave Tyler Junior Player of the Year, notched 6 points for the Northeastern University Huskies in their two wins over the Sacred Heart Pioneers. Solow scored 4 points in his college debut, and added a pair of goals in game two to now lead the NCAA with 6 points. Solow also added Hockey East Rookie of the Week honors to cap off his stellar first week in the collegiate ranks.

-Solow's longtime linemate Colin Theisen scored his first collegiate goal, and added an assist in Notre Dame's sweep of the University of Alabama-Huntsville this past weekend. Theisen was an All-USHL Third Team selection with 35 goals during the 16–17 season in Dubuque.

-Senior University of New Hampshire forward Shane Eiserman tallied the game-winning goal against #5 UMass-Lowell on Saturday with just 13.4 seconds left in the game during their season opener. Eiserman played in Dubuque during the 2013–14 season and was a fourth round selection by the Ottawa Senators.

-Four players were named to NHL rosters this season: Johnny Gaudreau (Calgary), Mike Matheson (Florida), Zemgus Girgensons (Buffalo) and Matthew Benning (Edmonton).
