Saints tally twice in the third, but Phantoms’ offense pulls through

PITTSBURGH — The Dubuque Fighting Saints’ preseason schedule is over. The Youngstown Phantoms rode four second period goals, and two more in the third to victory as they topped the Saints 6-3 on Saturday night at the USHL Fall Classic.

Taylor Schneider got the Fighting Saints on the board early in the first period in the midst of a 5-on-3 power play. Chayse Primeau, with his fourth point in three games as a Saint, found Schneider lurking on the back door, and he was able to slip the puck through Britt League to open the scoring.

After that, it was all Youngstown. Three goals within five minutes, including the first two within two minutes, got the Phantoms rolling. Curtis Hall and Chase Gresock got things started back to back, and then Dalton Hunter and Gueorgui Feduolov followed up the effort with two more.

The Saints and Phantoms traded goals in the third period, as Feduolov notched his second of the game at 8:25, followed up by a tally from Bauer Neudecker, his second of the preseason. Four minutes later, Jack Malone capitalized on a broken play to put the Phantoms up 6-2, but the Saints battled back for one more, as Kyle Looft’s shot through traffic found a way through and solved League to cut the lead in half.

The Saints came close once more, as a potential goal from Jan Kern was washed out, as his spinning backhander on a lone effort came close to the goal line, but upon further review, the goal was waved off, and it kept the Phantoms in the lead.

Jaxon Castor stopped 19 of 21 in his 30 and a half minutes of work. Cole Weaver stopped 17 of 21 in relief. League got the win with 22 saves on 25 shots fired his way.

The Fighting Saints’ preseason docket is at an end. Opening Night, presented by American Trust, is next on Friday, October 6 at Our House.
