DUBUQUE, Iowa — The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders held a lead three separate times, but it was the resilient Dubuque Fighting Saints who held the last lead for the final five minutes of action in a 5-4 win on Friday night at the Mystique Community Ice Center.
Aidan Fulp carried the Saints’ offensive drive with two goals and an assist on the night, including his game-winning tally, a slap shot from the right point that evaded Rider netminder Blake Pietila with five minutes to go in the third period.
The rally was also stoked, and started, by Tyce Thompson, whose centering pass just 90 seconds later found a way and tied the game at four apiece.
Those goals came in response to a largely back-and-forth affair where the Riders held the lead three times, and the Saints just once, as Alex Steeves and Jake Transit tallied back-to-back goals in the first period to secure Dubuque’s only early lead. Jordan Timmons’ shorthanded goal put Cedar Rapids up 1-0, and gave them a 3-2 lead early on in the second period.
Kevin Lombardi sent the RoughRiders to the room with the lead in the second period with his midpoint goal, which answered Fulp’s first goal of the game just moments earlier.
Evan Fear got the full start for the Fighting Saints, as he stopped 20 of 24 shots fired his way. Austin Park started things off for the Riders for two periods, and Blake Pietila stepped in for the final 20 minutes.
The Saints are back in action tomorrow at The Stable for a preseason scrimmage with the RoughRiders. Catch all of the action on the Fighting Saints Radio Network, Dubuque’s Super Hits 106.1 FM starting at 6:50 p.m. for the 7:05 p.m. puck drop.
