Caps get past Saints in back-to-back games

DUBUQUE, Iowa — The Dubuque Fighting Saints earned a point in the standings for the 11th consecutive game, but the Madison Capitols got a late overtime goal from their captain, Robby Fosdick, to lead them to a win. The Caps took down the Saints 3-2 in overtime on Sunday afternoon at the Mystique Community Ice Center.

Fosdick bashed home the rebound of a Mick Messner shot at the side of the net and beat goaltender Evan Fear, as the Saints dropped a third consecutive game, all in overtime. The chance followed a couple of grade-A opportunities for the Fighting Saints, who were unable to cash in at the Madison net, which was tended expertly by Dryden McKay.

On multiple occasions, McKay was superb, as he made 35 saves in the win for Madison. He denied Colin Theisen of an early scoring chance, got a piece of several others, and received some help from the goal post on five separate occasions. He took the winning decision in all three games this weekend for the Caps.

Cole Guttman helped get the Fighting Saints to the overtime period with an early third-period power play tally. He received a cross-crease pass from Patrick Kudla after a give-and-go, and stashed the puck into the net for his 18th goal of the year.

The Fighting Saints also got a goal from Zach Solow, who scored at even strength at 15:50 of the first period. Solow took a pass from the corner after a Madison turnover and bashed the puck past a surprised McKay to put the Saints up 1-0.

That goal was immediately responded to on a goal by Konur Peterson, who broke down the left wing side and beat Fear on a partial breakaway. That tied the game at one apiece.

Billy Jerry gave Madison the lead midway through the second period with a power play tally of his own. Madison went 3-for-5 on the man advantage in the weekend sweep.

Fear made 18 saves in the loss for the Fighting Saints.
