OT winner late pushes Dubuque over Bloomington

DUBUQUE, Iowa — It took nine shots into the overtime period, but Cole Guttman got the job done with less than a minute to go in the extra session. His goal sent the Dubuque Fighting Saints to a 3-2 win over the Bloomington Thunder on Wednesday night at the Mystique Community Ice Center.

Guttman’s goal came on a slick feed from the top of the zone, and he picked the top corner over Bloomington goaltender Logan Halladay.

Austin Rueschhoff tied the game for Dubuque following a penalty shot goal by Tarek Baker, which made it 2-1 Bloomington. Rueschhoff powered a directed shot by Jacob Hamacher towards the net through Halladay to tie it up.

Bloomington was the beneficiary of two penalty shot opportunities in the second period in which Bloomington controlled. August von Ungern-Sternberg, who scored a pretty goal early in the second period, got a penalty shot chance that was stuffed by Saints tender Jaxon Castor. Baker connected on his to put the Thunder up by one.

Jeff Baum started the scoring for the Fighting Saints early in the first period.  Regen Cavanagh stuck with a play down low in the offensive zone and zipped a pass to Baum, who was wide open in the high slot, for his second goal of the season to put the Saints up 1-0.

Dubuque received an early power play in overtime on an infraction by Jake Durflinger, but the Fighting Saints were unable to capitalize. They would not need it. They also killed off the two power play opportunities afforded to Bloomington.

Dubuque outshot Bloomington 36-16 for the game, and dominated the shot count 9-1 in the extra session. They outshot the Thunder in every single period of the game tonight.
