Dubuque Athletic Trainer jumps to New York Rangers after two seasons with Saints

DUBUQUE, IA–A member of the Dubuque Fighting Saints is heading straight to the National Hockey League. Sean Murdoch, Dubuque’s Athletic Trainer the past two seasons, has joined the NHL’s New York Rangers as the club’s Assistant Athletic Trainer.

“I’m very excited for this opportunity with the Rangers,” said Murdoch. “I met with Jim Ramsay, the Rangers Head Athletic Trainer, and things progressed from there. They brought me out to New York and offered me the position. Moving from Dubuque to the NHL is a big leap, probably a bigger leap than I was expecting, but it’s an unbelievable opportunity and I’m ready to get out there and tackle it.”

Murdoch joined the Fighting Saints in 2013 and accompanied the team to Russia for the 2013 Junior Club World Cup in Omsk, Russia. He worked on Head Coach Matt Shaw’s staff for the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 seasons, and was named to the staff for the 2015 USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game this past January in Dubuque.

The native of Michigan came to Dubuque from the University of Minnesota where he completed his master’s degree while working with the Golden Gopher Baseball team. Prior to his time at Minnesota, Murdoch completed his undergraduate degree at Michigan State University.

“My time in Dubuque helped get me ready for this position,” said Murdoch. “Dubuque was really the first time I didn't have a big support staff and was in charge of making the decision and making it right away. While I won't be the main decision maker in New York, the knowledge I gained in Dubuque will play a large part."

The Rangers, one of the NHL’s “Original Six” franchises play at the world-famous Madison Square Garden. They have won four Stanley Cups and have advanced to the Stanley Cup Playoffs each of the past five seasons.

New Dubuque Head Coach and General Manager Jason Lammers, who was introduced to the media in a press conference yesterday, will be in charge of hiring a replacement for Murdoch and Equipment Manager Trevor Heinzerling, who accepted a position with the Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL this week.

The 2015-2016 Dubuque Fighting Saints season presented by American Trust begins with preseason action against Cedar Rapids on September 4. A complete schedule is available at Group tickets, Party Zones and Party Suites are now available to book by calling 563.583.6680.
