Gamblers’ first period output gives them the edge

GREEN BAY, Wis. — With the game tied 1-1, the Green Bay Gamblers immediately responded to the Dubuque Fighting Saints’ tying goal immediately, and added two more goals to finish the period up 4-1. The Gamblers kept pace with the Saints offensively the rest of the way and outlasted them to the tune of a 7-4 result at the Resch Center on Monday night.

Ryan Kirwan responded to Tristan Lemyre’s tying goal 13 seconds later to give the Gamblers the lead. Victor Mancini posted one of his two points on the night by finding Kirwan off the rush on the ensuing faceoff to give Green Bay a lead they would not look back on.

On multiple occasions, the Fighting Saints clawed closer, but saw their efforts squashed immediately. Daniyal Dzhaniyev’s gorgeous individual effort to bring the Fighting Saints within two goals was erased a minute and four seconds later by Cam Lund’s first USHL goal off of a rebound at the side of the net.

Primo Self cut Green Bay’s lead to 6-3 off of a pretty spot from Connor Kurth, but 90 seconds later, Green Bay responded with a goal to pull back to a four-goal advantage thanks to Ryan Greene’s power play goal.

Dzhaniyev capped off his three-point effort with the final goal of the night at 11:07 with a roof shot from the corner. It was his 17th goal of the season.

Jackson Kunz scored the opening tally off of a bad break. An outlet feed off the stick of Braden Doyle ricocheted immediately backwards to a wide open Jackson Kunz who buried a point-blank chance to open the scoring for Green Bay. Dubuque found a way to tie it thanks to Lemyre, who converted on the ensuing power play opportunity.

Dubuque was strong on the power play, as they went 2-for-5 on the night. However, defensive zone breakdowns at even strength were the downfall on the night, as Green Bay only scored one of their seven goals on the power play.

The Fighting Saints are back in action to decide their Clark Cup playoff fate with the final three games of the regular season. The Saints host the Muskegon Lumberjacks on Thursday night, and the Green Bay Gamblers on Friday and Saturday night. Tickets are available at DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
