DUBUQUE, Iowa — The Dubuque Fighting Saints and Team USA traded leads, and finished overtime without a winner. The NTDP scored in all three rounds of the shootout, and defeated the Fighting Saints 5-4 on Thursday night at the Mystique Community Ice Center.
Lane Hutson, Maddox Fleming and Cutter Gauthier all scored in the shootout, and Tyler Muszelik stopped Matt Savoie in the second round to lead to the USA victory. Robert Cronin answered Hutson’s goal in the first round.
Zane Demsey gave the Saints the lead at the 8:23 mark of the third period, the Saints’ last lead of the game. His shot from the left point sailed through a screen and beat Muszelik to give the Saints the 4-3 lead. However, in the closing stages of regulation, Tyler Duke scored on a screened point shot to tie the game at four.
The Saints had a late double minor power play to work on, and caused chaos late in regulation time. A key block by the NTDP in the waning moments kept the Fighting Saints off the board in regulation, and in the early part of the overtime session.
Team USA rocketed to the lead early. Almost six minutes in, from a severe angle, Maddox Fleming scored his first of two goals going bar down on Saints goaltender Lukas Parik. But the Saints responded off of an NTDP turnover two and a half minutes later. Daniyal Dzhaniyev forced a turnover high in the zone, and Connor Kurth’s centering pass from behind the net found Andrei Buyalsky, who scored his 13th goal of the season.
The Saints took the lead in the second period. After a crucial save by Parik at one end, Savoie ripped a shot short side to tie the game at two, responding to a Frank Nazar III goal, and the former member of the NTDP, Henry Thrun, completed a coast-to-coast tally to give Dubuque the 3-2 lead heading into the third.
Fleming’s second goal of the night tied the game at three 2:51 into the third period.
The Fighting Saints turn their attention to Friday, March 26, a rematch against Team USA at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are available at DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
