Over the next two weeks, we will be putting a spotlight on each and every member of the 2020 Fighting Saints Training Camp roster. The players are set to report to Dubuque by the beginning of October with the USHL season slated to start November 6th. Dubuque returns 10 players from last year’s team, adds two from the NCAA ranks and brings in seven from their affiliate list last year. According to head coach Oliver David, this will be a very young, but talented team. This week we will be profiling Aidan McCarthy.
Aidan McCarthy 2019-20 Stats: 23 GP, 2.96 GAA, .891 SV%, 2 SO (Dubuque Fighting Saints)
Last season the Dubuque Fighting Saints expected to see Aidan McCarthy in a backup role to Erik Portillo. Instead, due to injury, McCarthy nearly split time evenly with the Swedish phenom. McCarthy played in 23 games to Portillo’s 27 and fully impressed in his boosted role.
It didn’t take long for McCarthy to impress as he won his first start of the season at the USHL Fall Classic and in his next start recorded his first career shutout. McCarthy had both of the Saints shutouts last season.
He was also awarded for his incredible first-year play with a spot in the BioSteel All-American Game-the USHL equivalent of the NHL All-Star Game. McCarthy was named USHL Goalie of the Week after his shutout performance over Sioux City on October 19th.
It will be full steam ahead for the second year Saint as he is the expected starter to begin the 2020-21 season. He started the last six games of the 2019-20 season before it was cut short and should be the man between the pipes on November 6th.
