Montes Off To fast start with milwaukee jr admirals

Our Affiliate of the Month spotlight continues for the month of December and with the holiday break fast approaching, we’re jumping ahead and getting you this edition a little earlier than usual. This month, we are featuring a Saints Affiliate who made a strong impression during Main Camp. That impression has continued to grow stronger as he has put up 32 points in 12 games this season with the Milwaukee Jr. Admirals U16 team. Get to know Max Montes a little better in this player spotlight.

What was your camp experience with the Saints like?

Overall the main camp experience was really important to me. I played the game at a higher level and it was really good competition all around.

What was your experience like coming to the Saints during the regular season?

When I came to Dubuque this season, I learned how everything worked in Dubuque and I really loved it all. I got to meet and play with high-end players and meet the coaches who are all very professional. All-around I loved everything about it and can’t wait to come up again.

Where are you playing now and how has that been?

This season I am playing with the Milwaukee Jr. Admirals U16 team and things are going well. I have great coaches who continue to push me to be a better player. Right now, I am playing pretty well. It’s also been fun to play with friends that I’ve known from playing with the Admirals over the years.

Biggest goal personally for you this season?

Right now my biggest goal for the season is to continue to get stronger on my feet and my upper body.

Favorite hockey player growing up and why?

My favorite hockey player was Sidney Crosby because I just loved everything about his game and always loved to score. My very first hockey number was 87 and of course I pick that for Crosby

Favorite hockey memory?

One of my favorite memories is when I was a little kid going outside in my backyard and skating on my rink with my brother. We would always have one on one games to see who is better. Sometimes he won and sometimes I won if I was lucky. After school every day I would count the hours until I got home just to be able to skate on my rink again.

Describe yourself as a player for someone who has never seen you play?

I am a fast-agile player who sees the ice very well. I can make a player when you need me to and put the puck in the back of the net. Also I can make plays out of nothing and help my team out in the offensive zone or defensive zone.

What would you consider your biggest strength/weakness right now?

My biggest strength is my speed because I can get away from guys and create space. My biggest weakness is my strength because I need to get stronger so I can stay on my feet more, which is why that is my biggest goal.

Who wins the Stanley Cup this season and why?

I think it’s going to be the Boston Bruins because right now they are the best team in the league, and I have watched some of their games and they look better than everyone. They move the puck well and their defense are really good at stepping up.

Any hockey superstitions or routines?

When I get to the rink I have my favorite song playing and I always need to be the first one in the locker room. When I get in to the locker room I open my bag and hang up my jerseys, pants and shoulder pads. After that I take off my dress clothes and put my warm clothes on and then tape my stick blade. Then right when I’m about to go on the ice, I say a little prayer in my head and head out on the ice.
