Saints On To Muskegon With Win

The Dubuque Fighting Saints won 3-2 in overtime and swept the Youngstown Phantoms in the best-of-three first round series. Dubuque scored two goals in the third period and Willie Knierim added the overtime winner as Dubuque enjoyed another first round sweep just like in last year’s playoffs. Dubuque was perfect on the penalty kill and used a power play goal to tie the game with five minutes left in regulation.

-Willie Knierim’s overtime goal was his eighth career playoff tally, tied for second in Fighting Saints history. Matias Maccelli and Dallas Tulik set up the goal for Knierim. Maccelli, after going scoreless in game one, had three assists in game two.

-The Saints scored all six of their goals in the series after the first 40 minutes of play. Dubuque was held off the scoreboard in the first two periods of both games. This game was much more even than game one, but Dubuque stuck to their game plan and executed for a full sixty-plus.

-The Saints, who struggled on the penalty kill in the regular season, were dominant in the first round on the PK. Youngstown was 0-8 on the power play in the series. Dubuque killed of some big power play’s in this series, but none bigger than the five on three last night.

-With the win, Dubuque gained their first two wins in the playoffs in Youngstown in team history. Dubuque had never won a playoff game in Youngstown before this series.

-This was the first time Youngstown had lost back to back games since mid-February in the regular season. Youngstown was one of the most consistent teams in the regular season and they looked to be one of the best suited for playoff hockey.

-Dubuque stuck to their game plan and played gritty hockey better than they have all season long. The Fighting Saints played a near flawless sixty-minutes in both games. Dubuque was potent on the forecheck and back check and showed a full effort for both games.

-The Saints, with their series win, have not only advanced to the playoffs for nine-straight seasons, but they have also advanced to the second round in every year as well.

-Dubuque will battle the Muskegon Lumberjacks in round two starting on Saturday night. Dubuque was 2-2 in the regular season against the Lumberjacks and they won one of two games against the Lumberjacks at the L.C. Walker Arena.

-Dubuque will host at least one playoff game at home this season. That game will be Tuesday April 23rd. If necessary Dubuque will also host game four at home the following day.
