MIDDLETON, Wis. — Tied 1-1 after one period of play against a team with a positive goal differential in the third period, the Fighting Saints stuck to a shooting mentality and were rewarded. Cole Guttman punched home the go-ahead goal, and Taylor Schneider added insurance with his first USHL goal en route to a 3-1 win at Bob Suter’s Capitol Ice Arena on Friday night.
Guttman was the recipient of a steal from Alex Steeves, who feathered a pass to a wide-open captain for the easy score. Steeves’ assist prolonged the growing #SteeverStreak to 10 games, with 14 points in that span. Guttman has points in seven of his last nine games with his fifth goal of the season.
Schneider picked up his second point of the game with a goal of his own. Tisdale and Bauer Neudecker teamed up on a 3-on-2 break to feed the first-year USHLer for the goal at the 17:15 mark of the third.
Cole Weaver got the nod in net for the Fighting Saints and did the job, making 14 saves in the win. He made an early stop in the first period to keep the game scoreless until Tyce Thompson made sure a goal was on the board. A pretty passing play between Schneider and Adam Tisdale on a Madison giveaway found Thompson in a shooting position, and he did not miss at the 13:03 mark.
Madison tied the game at one with just over a minute to go in the second period. Colin Felix took a pass from Michael Mancinelli following a Dubuque opportunity to best Weaver for the only goal he allowed on the night.
Neither team accomplished anything on the power play, but it marked the first time in six games that the Fighting Saints’ penalty kill was able to stave off the opposition completely on special teams.
Dryden McKay continued his strong play against the Saints, as he made 27 saves in the loss.
