Fighting Saints battle within one goal twice, but can’t find the equalizer

WATERLOO, Iowa — Joey Cassetti scored the go-ahead goal at the end of the second period as the Waterloo Black Hawks held on against a Fighting Saints rally to top them 3-2 at Young Arena on Friday night. It was the Fighting Saints’ third consecutive loss. It was Waterloo’s first win on home ice this season.

Josh Maniscalco scored a goal and added an assist in the Saints’ rally from 2-0 down and 3-1 down. It was the Arizona State commit’s shot that found a way through traffic, and Alex Steeves, in his return to the lineup, that found a way to pot the rebound to cut Waterloo’s 2-0 lead to one. It was his goal that cut Waterloo’s lead from 3-1 to 3-2.

Steeves’ impressive point streak was extended to seven games with four goals and seven assists inclusive.

Waterloo had done the damage already, which did not help the climb back to even any easier. Bobby Trivigno scored on the power play five minutes into the opening period, and Mason Palmer connected with just 30 seconds left in the opening frame to stoke the Black Hawks to the lead after one period of play.

Joey Cassetti scored his first goal as a member of the Waterloo Black Hawks, responding to a blocked shot at one end. Ethan Johnson found Cassetti as the late man in a 3-on-2 rush and his shot beat Jaxon Castor to the blocker side to hold up as the eventual game-winning goal.

Castor bailed out his teammates with several key saves in the first period to keep it close. After a defensive zone turnover, Castor came out to deny Jackson Cates on a clear-cut chance. He made 25 saves on the night.

Tonight marked the third consecutive game that the Saints’ power play struck. They went 1-for-3 on the man advantage, with Steeves’ goal being the only tally.

The Fighting Saints are back in action tomorrow for Military Appreciation Night, sponsored by Kwik Stop, Dairy Queen and Fazoli’s.
