Opening game at Fall Classic comes down to the wire

PITTSBURGH — It took until the final minute to break a 1-1 tie, as the Dubuque Fighting Saints outlasted the Lincoln Stars 2-1 on Thursday night at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. It was Dubuque’s opening game in the USHL Fall Classic.

Bauer Neudecker, after a Lincoln turnover, followed up a Jan Kern shot to the net that rebounded off of Stars goaltender Tomas Vomacka’s pads, and stashed a backhander into the open cage to put Dubuque up 2-1. It came after a furious push by the Stars, including controlling much of the play in the third period of play.

It was his first goal of the preseason, set up by Kern and Nick Heid.

The Stars tied the game at the 14:25 mark of the third period. With just seconds remaining on a power play, which was nearly 90 seconds of a 5-on-3 power play chance, the Stars struck. Philippe Lapointe got a stick on a point shot from Christian Krygier and past Jaxon Castor to put the Stars even at one. They were rewarded for outshooting the Saints 12-5 in the third period.

Otherwise, Castor was marvelous throughout in his second game of action during the preseason slate. He made 23 saves on 24 shots fired his way throughout the night. It was also his second win in as many games, as he looks to follow up on a 30-win campaign a season ago.

Chayse Primeau started the week as a member of the Lincoln Stars, but by midweek, he was a Dubuque Fighting Saint. In his first game of action as a Saint, he was rewarded for his efforts against his former club. Scott Corbett forced a steal deep in the Lincoln zone, and centered a pass to Primeau who stashed the puck up and above the shoulder of Vomacka to put Dubuque on top.

It took 37 minutes for the first tally, as Primeau’s goal came at 17:10 of the second period.

The USHL Fall Classic in Pittsburgh continues with a tune-up against the stingy rival Waterloo Black Hawks. Catch all of the exciting preseason action on Dubuque’s Super Hits 106.1 FM or on HockeyTV starting at 4:00 p.m. CDT.
