Preston scores twice to continue stellar preseason

DUBUQUE, Iowa — Fan Fest was a success, as the Dubuque Fighting Saints struck in quick succession in the second period, and added an insurance tally in the third period, as well as an empty-netter, in a 6-4 win over the Chicago Steel on Wednesday night at the Mystique Community Ice Center.

Quinn Preston’s shorthanded goal, a third-period tally, stoked the Fighting Saints to a 5-3 lead. It was Preston’s second goal of the game, and third in two games during the preseason. Matthew Brown added an empty netter with seconds remaining to put the game away for good.

Chicago did not make it easy throughout, as they scored the opening goal in the first period, thanks to a slick wrist shot from Todd Goehring, then tied the game at two, and proceeded to delve into the Saints’ lead at two separate occasions, but could not tie the game and send it into overtime.

The Steel did, however, get two goals from Clark Cup hero Tyler Gratton, who responded to tallies from Casey Staum and Cole Guttman, and a multi-assist effort from newcomer Samuel Bucek.

Taylor Schneider also scored his first goal in a Fighting Saints uniform, converting on a rebound during a power play opportunity. His goal capped off a stretch of two Saints goals in 37 seconds, and three goals overall in over a minute.

Saints goalie Jaxon Castor got the full 60 minutes on Wednesday and came away with the victory, topping the Steel’s Derek Schaedig.

Dubuque’s power play struck twice, as Guttman and Schneider both tallied on the man advantage.
