Dubuque wins first game of three games in three nights

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The power play went 2-for-2, and Colin Theisen notched his second hat trick of the season, as the Dubuque Fighting Saints started a busy stretch off on the right foot. The Saints took down the Sioux Falls Stampede 5-2 at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center on Thursday night, which swept the season series between the two teams.

Theisen’s second goal proved to be the game winner on the night, as he took a slick feed from Zach Solow racing into the zone on a quick rush opportunity. His first came off the wall on the power play, assisted by Solow and Jacob Hamacher, and his third came from Cole Guttman and Brendan Bushy.

The last time Theisen completed the hat trick was back on December 30 against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. His three goals tonight tied him with Fargo’s Jack Adams for the league lead in goal scoring. Theisen has also scored six goals in his last four games.

Veli-Matti Tiuraniemi kept the power play perfect with a coast-to-coast goal of his own, late in the first period. All by his lonesome, he carried the puck through the Sioux Falls defense and fired a puck through Jeremy Swayman to make it 2-0 Saints.

Austin Rueschhoff completed the scoring for the Fighting Saints with an empty net goal.

Jack Doremus and Will Garin scored for the Stampede, who outshot the Saints 38-31 on the night. That meant Evan Fear, who got the start for Dubuque, was busy in net, making 36 saves on the night—many of them of the grade-A variety, especially late in the third period when the Stampede were pressing with the extra attacker.

Swayman finished with 26 saves on 30 shots.

The Saints will move on to take the Des Moines Buccaneers tomorrow (Friday) at Buccaneer Arena starting at 7:05 p.m. Catch all of the action on Dubuque’s Super Hits 106.1 FM, or on the USHL’s streaming video provider, HockeyTV.

They will return home on Saturday, February 4 for Character Development Night along with Two By Two Education, sponsored by Magoo’s Pizza. The 50/50 pot has reached $3,000! For tickets, call the box office at 563.583.6880, or go to DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
