DUBUQUE, Iowa — Battling back to 2-1 and 3-2, the Dubuque Fighting Saints came close to sending the home fans happy, but they were unable to do so. Madison scored twice in the third period, and twice before, to defeat the Fighting Saints 4-2 at the Mystique Community Ice Center on Saturday night. It was Madison’s first regulation win over the Saints since they returned to the league in 2014.
Billy Jerry responded to Quinn Preston’s opening salvo, and Eetu Selanne did the same when Colin Theisen got the Saints within one once again. Several point streaks continued in the midst of that, as Theisen scored for the fourth consecutive game, Preston furthered his point streak to eight games, and incredibly, Zach Solow’s point streak reached 18 games with a secondary assist on Theisen’s goal.
Kevin O’Neil and Easton Brodzinski started the scoring for Madison. Both goals came off the rush, as O’Neil buried an opportunity from the right wing, and Brodzinski followed it up with a shot that deflected off of a Saints stick past Jaxon Castor en route to the 2-0 lead.
Preston got the Saints back within one after bashing away at a rebound opportunity at the side of Madison goaltender Dryden McKay’s net. The goal was his seventh of the season, assisted by Cole Guttman, whose strong play continued.
Theisen converted on a Keegan Ford cross checking penalty, following up on a stuff attempt by Keenan Suthers at the netfront. It was his 16th tally of the season, and his 50th USHL point.
Selanne, however, put the game away five minutes after Theisen’s goal with a breakaway goal through Castor’s five hole to seal the game for the road team.
Dubuque only took one penalty the entire game, and it came early in the first period. The Saints’ power play converted on one of three opportunities. Dubuque outshot Madison 26-24 for the game.
